The key to the great fit of these jeans is the rise, which is slightly higher (but not TOO high!) in back and lower (but not TOO low!) in front. The waist also tapers in more than on most low-rise jeans. They fit my curves without the gapping at the waist I typically see on most jeans, and I can bend over to pick up my toddler without worrying about exposing myself in back. Also, the inseam is all of 35". I'm 5'9" and have never had to hem jeans before, but even my highest heels aren't quite high enough. I'm not complaining though!
